Introduction
Animals play an important role in the production of food, clothes, laboratory investigation and entertainment. Information and common sense, together
with the thorough current knowledge about animal sensibility, become
the first awareness of the suffering for which we are responsible.
From here onwards, the disconnection between the animal-sentient-being
and the animal-object-machine in which it is trying to be turned
into, explodes in resistance movements for liberation, guided by
an increasingly strengthened biocentric ethics that - taking different
positions - will progressively lead to animal liberation. Be it
due to the amplification of the circle of ethical considerations
to include in it the animals, or be it by being informed of the
benefits that individually and collectively are derived from practicing
and promoting respect to non-human animal life, the movements of
change are spread worldwide.
A survey
from Yale University found that the elderly or the less educated
are those who see animals as resources. [Scientific American, February/1997]
Even in a meat-eating society as the Argentinean one, more and more
young people embrace the environmentalist cause and declare themselves
to be vegetarians. In all sectors, even in religious ones, voices
directed to promote friendly relationships with animals emerge. "Following a cruelty-free lifestyle will no occupy all your time; it is
a way of life where love for animals and nature as a whole is really
exercised. It doesn’t use up energy in “doing”
things but rather in “stop doing” others. None interferes
with the possibility of taking care of other humans. If something
portrays the present times, is the great variety of options that
technology offers regarding food, clothes, cosmetics, amusement,
etc. “Our task should be to liberate us from ourselves...
extending our circle of compassion to embrace in it all the living
creatures and the entire nature and its beauty" [Albert Einstein]
These
movements impugn humanity's supposed humanity, revolutionize ethics,
and are the symbol for an absolutely necessary change. Because what
harms animals harms all animals, including the human animal. What
destroys them, destroys us. Animal defense is a reason for pride
for who practices it.
